Focus

Focus: Avoiding Mental Clutter

focus It is so hard to maintain focus in this day and age…Hi peeps, hope you’re good, I was just on social media today and its amazing to me how much garbage gets posted and I mean some really stupid stuff which strangely enough, I’m drawn to, I mean we are all drawn to it let me give you an example, say you see a tweet with a cow riding a unicycle, balancing a pig on its head and eating a banana (yeah I know weird imagination.) does it add value to your life ? no.… do you wanna click on it? hell yeah …but why? because it is entertaining. Our minds are drawn to such useless clutter its mind boggling. You can see it in the popularity of things on the Internet idle stuff gets way more traffic than stuff that will enlighten you or teach you something useful have you ever seen someone’s video who was teaching something useful go viral (yawn boring right?). We have trained our brains to seek constant entertainment, watching cartoons every day or some epic fail videos on YouTube (I see you people). We just can’t get enough of these things even though they have absolutely no payoff, the question of why we are so attracted to mental fodder can only be answered by each individual.

The problem is we fill our minds with so much mental clutter we are unable to focus and achieve anything, because we develop this distraction habit and feed it every day, we are unable to focus, the brain does not operate at it’s optimal when you multitask and anyone who tells you that they are at their most efficient when they multitask is either lying or they are from another planet. Every time we see a clickable link with something entertaining versus something educational we choose entertainment 90 percent of the time. If you want to develop focus you have to develop a mental fortitude, you cannot have success if you don’t become focused. Don’t be like the dabbler who starts doing something, sees something shiny then gets distracted by that and perpetuates the cycle. Nothing in the world ever came to fruition without focus if you are constructing a building you are never going to finish if you stop and stare at every car that passes by on the road, if you are studying you are never going to pass if you get distracted by every pretty girl who passes, you need to take the reigns of your mind. Imagine your mind is like a thoroughbred horse; you need to reel him in and put on some blinders, this way he will be laser focused on the finish line and isn’t distracted by the crowds around him.

What are your thoughts on staying focused? what do you do to remain focused when you have something important to do?
